Day 29: Mon Aug 1 "On to the Stewart-Cassiar Hwy to Boya Lake"

Slept last night at a private campground by a Lake just before Teslin. Arrived late and decided we couldn't push the kids any farther. Site was a big grassy field on someone's private property. Nice enough and did the job.

We woke up around 8:30am and had cereal for breakfast and then Jonathan took the kids down to the lake front while I tidied up and got the RV ready for the road. We pulled out around 10:45am and hit the road heading for Boya Lake.

On the way we saw a porcupine cross the road! Funny looking creatures. We have see a flattened one on our trip too. :(

We stopped in Teslin for gas but the internet was down so it was cash only. Jonathan put in some gas and saved a little bit of cash in his wallet to cover camping expenses. We hoped to find a gas station further down the highway that we could fill the rest of the tank using our credit card.

Ollie was getting a little antsy by this point and We implemented the Pez Timer. He got to load up his Pez dispenser and every 15 min the timer would by off and he could eat a pez candy. (And so could Amelia). This eased his fidgets a little!

At xactly 12 noon we left the Yukon territory! Had a pee stop at Swan Lake at 12:30pm. The road wavers in and out of BC and the Yukon along this part of the Highway. By 3pm we were back in the Yukon at Nugget City (aka twighlight zone or Bermuda triangle) and Jonathan popped in again to see if anyone had his black MEC hoody. Still no. Bummer. It should be noted that Jsy was brave enough to actually shut off our vehicle here with the confidence it would start again. This place is a curse. Thankfully the M T started up no problem. XO Nugget City was down and out for internet and credit card processing, too. Not that we would have purchased gas from them anyhow!

Down the road we stopped in at Junction 37 and Jonathan pulled onto the gas station ther and ran in to see if they had their credit card machine working. Turned out that they were on the old dial up system for internet and they still had connections! Jonathan was so happy and he high fived the guy super hard. He explained to the owner that all the other gas stations are cash only and people can't get get gas because they only have credit cards. We encouraged him to put up a sign at the side of the highway advertising that their system still works. He lit up at the idea that he could be getting a whack of business today. He laughed and said to me, "man, you husband high fived me so hard that my hand still stings!!". We filled up the tank and used the free sani dump (free with fill up) and left feeling pretty positive from our interactions (and very happy we could get gas for the RV, since gas stations are few and far between around here!). From Junction 37 We ventured off the Alaskan Highway to the Stewart-Cassiar.

Around 4pm we were officially back in BC and within 10 min we had seen a mama black bear with two cubs. It is quite interesting that on this whole trip, so far, we have seen all the big animals only in BC and zero in the Yukon.

We saw lots of trees affected by forest fires along this route. Very striking.

We arrived at Boya Lake in the evening and managed to get the last available spot in site #11. It was half of a double site but up a steep bank. It took some tricky maneuvering for Jonathan to get the RV up there without scraping off the bike rack, but he managed It! The other half of the site didn't get claimed... Too steep and narrow for anyone to join us. Oliver got on his pedal bike and decided to ride down the hill. He assured us he could do it, but turned out He had not got his pedals in the right position for braking with his coaster brakes. He realized He couldn't slow down and right before he would have taken a header off a steep bank beside the road into a bunch of trees and bushes, he managed to turn his bike and avoid catastrophe. He scared himself, and scared a senior german couple that happened to be walking near by. I think they thought we were crazy to let him try it! And then they had a horrified look when they saw Amelia on her strider looking like she might give it a go! (She didn't!).

We walked and Ollie biked down to the dock and playground and went for a swim. Ollie jumped into daddy's arms (life jacket on) and endured the chill. He is pretty gung ho, that kid! Meemee wanted to do it too, but once she dipped her toes in, she just had a quick swoosh in the water and that was enough.

There were tons of little minnows swimming around the dock. Ollie was excited to catch some and we agreed that I would help him make a net to try catching some. We found a great branch later with a forked end and I made him a net using a mesh laundry bag. Daddy carved Ollie's name into the handle. Pretty fun. Lots of drag on it though! Tough to catch much!

We chatted with a dad and his three kids at the dock side for awhile. Turned out he was from Nelson and owned the Alpine Motel. Ollie was riding around on his bike and had a slow speed wipe out resulting in a scraped elbow that needed some attention.

After that, we went back to our site and Jonathan cooked up a feast of breaded pan fried pike that the fisherman from Tatchun Lake had generously given us. It was sooooooo yummy!! Amelia ate a huge portion. She is a fish eater, oh boy!

After dinner it was a little bike ride and bath for the kids and into bed.

We planned to stay another night and would scope out lakeside sites in the morning that might become available.
