Day: 28: Sunday, July 31 "Tatchun Lake to Whitehorse, and the GIANT braeburn cinnamon bun!"

Missy Moo was awake in the night, which was too bad. We woke at 8am and got going on breakfast so that we had time to pump up the dinghy (12 ft inflatable yacht) and go for a paddle and attempt to fish.

Jonathan rolled the dinghy down in the chariot and inflated it down at the dock. I brought the kids down and we got loaded up. It was a beautiful lake, and the advice for fishing was to cast out near the reed beds and see if any pike would take a bite.  We paddled around the edge of the lake for a bit and looked for reed beds that looked "fishy". Jonathan cast a few times with no bites. He grew accustomed to casting and reeling in with no action, and then "surprise"... in a spot that I have to add that I suggested he cast... he got a bite! He reeled in a 12" long pike and Oliver helped to net it. Pretty darn exciting! It was a pretty small fish for what was out there, but certainly big enough to keep and cook up for lunch! Oliver was pretty thrilled with it all and was perfectly okay when Jonathan bonked it to put it out of its misery.  We tried another reed bed and a metal hull boat sidled over our way. Jonathan had been chatting with this couple earlier... a very nice couple of experienced fishers. They came over to see how we were doing, and give us a lure to try. They had caught a big pike that he said was about 6lbs, but it looked way bigger in the photo they showed us. They showed us the plastic bag of all the meat they had filleted. Awesome!  We cast a few more with no luck and headed back to the dock with our little pike attached to the stringer.

When we got up to the site and got the grill fired up, that same guy came up and brought us the bag of pike and a bag of seasoned breadcrumbs. They had a lot of fish already and brought it to share with us! so nice!!!   We put it in the fridge to save for dinner, and thanked him very much. Jonathan fried up our little pike on the campstove grill (which we love, btw) and honestly... Amelia was in there like a dirty shirt. Just as soon as Jonathan could flake it off the bones and put it on the bun, she was grabbing handfuls of fish off the bun and stuffing it in her mouth. She loves fish! she pretty much at the entire pike herself. So lovely to see.  Fish doesn't get much fresher than that! Lake to mouth in under 40min.

We went to deflate the dingy and Jonathan had a quick swim and Oliver had a little dip too. Oliver is very brave with the lake swimming... these lakes are chilly!!!!!!  he knows they are cold but is still game to jump in.

After saying goodbye to our friends, we hit the road again for Carmacks and gassed up the RV (114L), then pushed on to Braeburn. We stopped in Braeburn 4:50 to 5:30pm for a GIANT, and I mean GIANT cinnamon bun... $10 each and they were the size of dinner plates. The best part was that they were so delicious all the way through. Every bite. It fed our family for two days.   Jonathan ordered a Rueben sandwich and I had the grilled cheese. They were also super-sized. Ridiculous really... the bread was like bread for a giant. They were perfectly proportioned GIGANTIC sandwiches.

By 7pm we were back in Whitehorse and hit up the superstore for groceries and got back on the road to head south from Whitehorse as far as we could make it. We wanted to reach Teslin, but the kids were getting a bit squirrely and tired and so we stopped short of Teslin at a private campground situated on a lake and made a quick dinner, dosed up the melatonin and got the kids into bed.

photos will have to be added later from my phone!
