Day 24: Wed, July 27 "On the
Road to Dawson City!!"
Woke up at our lakeview site at
Twin Lakes and had an easy cereal breakfast again. Amelia Wren was awake at 7am
and snuggled into bed with me and Oliver up in the Lion's Den.
Ollie rode bikes and played with
Ezzie while we got packed up. The dad from the other family had arrived
yesterday and works at the yukon campsites doing maintenance. The family had
followed him here to Twin Lakes to hang out. While we were getting all our
things packed away, the kids and I were watching the dad, Geoff, do some work
with the bobcat. Minutes later, Geoff drove up in his bobcat and asked Oliver
if he wanted a ride. Ollie immediately ran over, bike helmet still on, and
asked if he could ride in the bobcat. How exciting!!! Ollie replaced his helmet with some peltor
ear protection and rode in the bobcat and dug up some dirt. He actually drove
it himself (with Geoff in the bobcat, of course) back to our site. His smile
was as wide as could be! As he drove up,
Amelia shouted, "Meemee try! Meemee try!". Next time, little mite.
We left Twin Lakes around noon,
and on the way to Carmacks, Jonathan was stung by a wasp that flew into the car
window and down the back of his shirt. He was hollering and swatting, but managed
to expertly maintain control of the RV. I was in the back with the kids and
jumped up to help see if the wasp was still there, but it was gone. Oh man.
Ollie and Jonathan had just been investigating some wasps that were
digging around near our campsite earlier.
When we reached Carmacks a short
drive later, and stopped at the little burger joint for lunch (just off the
side of the highway). While we were eating, Devon and family rolled into the
parking lot and Devon jumped out to advise us that the Gold Rush RV Park was
full, but he pulled a few strings and made us a reservation with his mum who
owns it. Sweet!! Oh, and when we got
cell range and I had texted Geoff with Jonathan's cell number, as they had been
chatting and were going to exchange numbers. When I texted the information to
the number on Jonathan's phone, the return text from Geoff advised that his
daughter, Leah, had just been stung by wasps 22 times. Poor girl! A waspy day.
Sometime around 3pm we passed
through Pelly Crossing. Amelia had a meltdown in the carseat and we had to pull
over to calm her down before hitting the road again.
We arrived in DAWSON CITY around
6:30pm… yehaw!!! We did it!! It was pretty neat to roll in there and imagine
how things must have been during the Gold Rush times. We pulled in to see our friends waving, and
Sally welcoming us! It was a nice evening, and apparently Dawson has had lots
of rain lately.
We parked in our little space
among the other RV's in the parking lot style RV park. We also got our free
shower tokens from Diane, thanks to Super Sally :)
Wandered around town and went for
fish and chips at Sourdough Joe's. I ordered the two piece cod and chips and
the kids ate most of my meal! They love fish these days! Jonathan enjoyed a beer and I enjoyed a glass
of wine to celebrate making it to Dawson City. We went next door to the little
ice cream shop on Front Street and Amelia chose strawberry, and Ollie chose
blue bubblegum flavour. We all enjoyed our desserts and wandered around town
investigating the buildings and getting our bearings. Most shops were closed.
Jonathan poked his head into Diamond Gertie's Gambling Parlour and considered
coming by later that night to watch a can-can show (but never did). We played along a boardwalk by the Yukon
School of Arts for a bit. Ollie teaching Amelia how to play tag again. She is a
good sport.
As usual, this daylight dealio
makes us lose track of time so easily and it was 11pm again before the kids
went to bed. This time I remembered that I brought Melatonin and gave the kids
a tiny dose before bed. They nodded off easily and Missy Moo stayed asleep all
night and didn't wake up the next morning until 8:30am.
